Guinea pigs cannot climb or jump and this can make handling them easier. However, to care for guinea pigs well you must learn how to pick them up properly. Adults guinea pigs can weight between 850g 1.5 kg. so it is best to pick them up with two hands in order to support their weight. To support them well, one hand is best put under the hind quarters and the other used control their front legs by supporting their shoulders.

Care for guinea pigs includes being aware of their housing needs, providing the right food and water. It is also important in the care for guinea pigs to under their social needs and to be on the lookout for health problems. It is also important to consider the time and effort you will need to spend in cleaning and tending to your guinea pig. Considering guinea pigs average lifespan is 1 - 2 years this is a considerable commitment.

Not least to be considered is veterinary fees. Overgrown teeth and claws will need to be clipped and if unwell, your guinea pig will need a visit to the vet and may need medication. As with all pets, all these things need to be considered before getting your guinea pig.
