In this article we will focus on the most popular types of snakes kept as pets, all these snakes can be kept in a well controlled vivarium.
Milk snakes
A popular brightly colored snake, the milk snake is found in both central and north America, it's often mistaken for the deadly coral snake and its coloration changes slight dependant on where it's from, those snakes from central America as often brighter in color. Milk snakes from Central America will need their vivarium kept at a slightly higher temperature as they are used to being near the equator.
Common garter snake
Found all across North America, the common garter snake has a very narrow girth. It's vivarium needs to have it's temperature carefully under control, you will need to adjust temperatures for summer / winter as this is what the snakes are used to in their natural habitat. This snake is often found near water, and as such you should provide a large bowl of water large enough for the snake to submerse in, it's crucial to ensure the bowl is big enough to avoid spillage as damp living conditions can cause skin issues for the common garter snake.
Rat snake
Common in North America, the rat snake comes in a number of types, they are sometime also found in Asia. There is usually a fair but of color difference between young and older snakes, there has also been some color mutation with some other colors including black and yellow being available. As their name suggests the Rat snake likes to feed on rats and other small rodents, they also enjoy climbing, you should ensure your vivarium reflects this.
Corn snake
The corn snake is very popular as not only does it reach maturity quickly at 2 years old, but it's also available in a large variety of colors. Usually corn snakes are red, orange or grey with red or orange markings, although more unusual color like the white 'snow corns' are available.
Boa Constrictor
The most popular of the large snake pets the Boa Constrictor is, it's found in many different area's around the world and as such comes in a large number of variations. Young Boa's are born around 50cm's in length and are relatively easy to care for, but you do need to be well prepared as they will grow substantially in size reaching maturity in around 3 years and with this you will need to ensure you provide much larger accommodation for them. In addition to the larger living quarters an increased diet will occur, with larger Boa's able to eat whole dead rabbits or chickens.
Emerald Tree Boa
As the name suggests this type of snake will require thick branches for climbing and as it found in tropical climate quarters will need to be kept hot and humid. They will require regular spraying and a good source of fresh water to ensure the snakes remain will hydrated. It's important their food and water is put up high for them as they would be used to feeding high in trees. The Emerald Tree Boa is smaller than a Boa Constrictor growing to around 150cm in length.
Common King Snake
The Common King snake is available in a range of different forms making them very popular pets, they all require similar conditions and are known for breeding well. Shy in nature they will require some areas in their quarters to retreat to, and as they are not keen climbers their housing need not be tall.
